Listening to the Ether / A Sonic Intervention of Dan Flavin’s Cornered Light Sculptures |  interactive installation  |  Mana Contemporary, NJ  |  2024

Presented by Monira Foundation in collaboration with TESTU Collective

Light exists as electromagnetic radiation, yet visible light represents only a fraction of the vast electromagnetic spectrum surrounding us. Invisible waves of electromagnetic energy continuously permeate our environment—undetected by human eyes but omnipresent in the spaces we inhabit.

Dan Flavin’s luminous sculptures generate complex electromagnetic fields that extend far beyond their visible glow. These multispectral emissions radiate outward, invisibly mapping and transforming the architectural spaces that contain them.

Artists Serena Stucke and Dan Tesene of the intermedia collective TESTU tap into these hidden electromagnetic worlds through specialized EMF pickup coils. By deploying various coil configurations across each sculpture, they reveal and translate the invisible spatial patterns of Flavin’s works—making audible the inaudible.

This unique sonic intervention invites audiences to experience Flavin’s art through an entirely new sensory dimension, the installation was presented in multi channel surround.
